W/S Venice Shoreline Crip (VSLC)
The Venice Shoreline Crip is one of the many gangs under the Deuce (2x) car, allies of most Neighborhood and Rollin O's Crip gangs. The Venice Shoreline Crip are the largest African-American street gang in Venice, a region on the Westside of Los Angeles. Formed out of the extreme poverty and racism in Venice's Oakwood neighborhood, which was originally labelled as a "servant's zone" by Venice founder Abbot Kinney and one of the few places within a mile of San Andreas's coastline where blacks could own property. Due to restrictive covenants that enforced racial segregation Oakwood was set aside as a settlement area for blacks and the population increased rapidly as hundreds moved to Venice to work in the oil fields during the 1930s and 1940s. Into the 1950s the City of Los Angeles had neglected Oakwood so much that it became known as "the ghetto by the sea" with unpaved narrow streets leading to run down bungalows, many of which lacked foundations. While unemployment soared with the closing of the oil fields, the 1960s brought drugs and racial tensions to Oakwood and gang membership began to rise among the already established Venice 13 gang. Inspired by the Black Power Movement and after a series of militant black riots in Venice in the late 1960s the Shoreline Crips were founded alongside some of the original Crip gangs formed by Tookie Williams and Raymond Washington in South Central Los Angeles. In the 1980s as crack cocaine was introduced and gangs began focusing more on money rather than their original politics, the Venice Shoreline Crips became heavily involved in the narcotics business in Oakwood and on the Venice Boardwalk as well. Leading into the 1990s gunfire was heard on nightly basis as the Shoreline Crips battled against the rival gang Culver City 13, after Shoreline cliques were pushed out of the Mar Vista Gardens Projects in a thanksgiving firebomb attack on black homes and cars. Shortly after, Oakwood exploded as a war broke out between the Shorelines and Verona 13 over control of the Verona drug trade until a cease-fire was arranged between the two gangs.
Oakwood, Los Angeles
The Oakwood neighborhood is no strange to crime activity, being one of the most infamous and socially uneven neighborhoods within, Venice district. Los Angele's Oakwood neighborhood has a median household income of $17,138, which is worse than the local medians. About 15 percent of residents have a college degree or higher. And it's 35 percent White and 17 percent Asian.
During this historic housing crunch, the once-tacky community of wall-to-wall postwar apartment buildings has become a hot spot for young renters with a little (of mom and dad's) money. A few decades ago only desperate UCSM students would venture so far South, where Westwood Boulevard ends at Venice Boulevard. Now the neighborhood is awash in Bruin blue and hand-me-down BMWs.
The Sudden Rise of Crime Wave In Oakwood, Venice
On April 4th, 2017. Gunfire broke out at Dupont Street. Two men were killed in what some of the locals claim to be a gang related drive by, driven by a dispute that hasn't come to a end for the past two decades. Police arrested 35-year-old Hugo Lacerda and 22-year-old Troy Tarango in connection with the shooting that took the life of 24-year-old Marshon Davis and Jake Wilmington. The camera footage released to public shows Jake reaching for his waist, as a car drives past, Marshon is killed in crossfire after the vehicle did a return few minutes post interactions with Wilmington. A firearm was never found on Marshon's body, whatsoever Jake Wilmington was seen firing back at the vehicle and later dying at the scene.
Rivalry and Truce
The Venice Shoreline Crips are rivals with the many of the surrounding Latino gangs such as the Santa Maria 13, Santa Maria 17th Street, 18th Street and the Culver City 13 gang. The war with the Culver City 13 spilled into the lives of many not affiliated with gangs as bystanders and parents began being shot at on a regular basis. In the early 1990s the Shorelines became involved in a war with the neighboring Venice 13 gang, over control of Oakwood's drug trade, which left almost two dozen people dead in 9 months. Eventually Verona 13 would acquire the support of fellow Sotel 13, Santa Maria 13 and Culver City 13 Sureno gangs through the Mexican Mafia and the war eventually ended with a cease-fire negotiated between V13 and the Shorelines in exchange for a new community center in the Oakwood neighborhood. The Truce (V13 & VSLC): they had a meeting at Oakwood park, OGs and Vets, there is beliefs that the church on the 7th across from the park may have been involved, and they made peace, and the peace has maintained. I also think that seeing so many white people move into their neighborhood contributed to the unity between blacks and browns
